As many of you know, the challenge of the bodyworker is in maintaining balance. Life is full and often demanding; we may find ourselves faced with exhaustion. The trick is to notice the signs of fatigue and take restorative action before the pendulum swings into imbalance and energy drain.
Fatigue can come in many different forms; Our work can be emotionally exhausting. The amount of energy we spend holding space and being attentive shouldn’t be underestimated. Massage Therapists, like nurses and others in the helping professions, are prone to something called ‘compassion fatigue.’ Our natural empathy isn’t an inexhaustible spring. Fortunately, with supportive self-care and the practice of healthy boundaries – our ability to be compassionate, present and effective will not be diminished.
All this being said, I’ve also found my massage practice to be profoundly restorative. It’s my sanctuary.
